Make a Difference!
You can make a difference and help reduce storm water pollution.
Do your part to reduce Storm Water pollution. Storm water pollution can result from the
contamination of runoff from urban areas as it drains from streets or property through the municipal storm water drainage
system and into our Multi-Purpose Retardation Basins (MPRBs) Athletic Fields.
Are you contributing to Storm Water pollution?
Common residential activities that may contribute to contaminants in storm water include lawn
mowing and fertilizing, car washing and maintenance, and the application of pesticides and herbicides. Industrial and
commercial activities with uncovered outdoor storage or process areas, loading docks and equipment maintenance, and
washing areas may also contribute pollutants to urban runoff. Common items that may be carried by runoff if not disposed
of properly include Styrofoam, paper, and plastic products.
How Can I Prevent Storm Water Pollution at Home?
Household Cleaning Product Use
- Buy only the amount needed.
- Clean up spills immediately.
- Follow the directions on the product's label.
- If possible, purchase nontoxic, biodegradable, and/or recyclable products.
- Dispose of unused portions and containers properly.
Fertilizer/Herbicide/Pesticide Use
- Do not over-fertilize near ditches, streams, or other water bodies.
- Avoid fertilizing or applying pesticides before an expected rain - the chemicals may wash away into the storm water drain.
- Store pesticides, fertilizers, or other chemicals in a covered area to prevent contamination of runoff.
- Choose the most effective but least toxic product, such as dehydrating dusts, insecticide soaps, etc.
- Dispose of unused portions and containers properly.
Paint and Solvent Use
- Use according to label directions and offer unused portions to others that can use them.
- Recycle used paint thinner by storing in a closed jar until particles settle.
- Strain off the clear liquid for reuse.
- Consider water-based products; carefully estimate amount; retint paint if wrong color.
- Dispose of unused portions and containers properly.
What Can I Do if I See Someone Throwing Trash Into a Storm Drain or Ditch?
A storm water drainage system's sole purpose is to transport storm water to the nearest waterway
or Multi-Purpose Retardation Basins (MPRBs). Dumping trash, pollutants, and debris into the storm drain is illegal
and is a violation of the Clean Water Act. If you see someone dumping trash, oil, or other materials into the storm water
drainage system , call the City of Sartell at 253-2171.
