When is a Building Permit Required?
A building permit is required when:
- Building or remodeling a house
- Re-roofing and/or re-siding
- Constructing a shed or accessory building
- Installing a wood or gas fireplace, wood stove, or chimney
- Finishing a lower level or basement
- Adding or extending a garage
- Replacing windows
- Changing or installing heating or air conditioning
- Installing plumbing fixtures including underground sprinkler systems
- Constructing a retaining wall over four feet in height
- Constructing a swimming pool over 5,000 gallons
- Putting on a deck or porch
- Doing electrical work
- Work on commercial and industrial buildings
- Cement Slabs
- Fences require a Zoning Permit.
Application for permit
To obtain a permit, the applicant shall first file an application on a form furnished by the
Building Department.
+ Note: Separate permits are required for plumbing, mechanical and
electrical work.
Such application shall:
- Identify and describe the work to be covered by the permit for which application is made.
- Describe the land on which the proposed work is to be done by legal description, street address and tax I.D. number.
- Indicate the use and occupancy for which the proposed work is intended.
- Be accompanied by construction documents and site plan.
- State the valuation of the proposed work including material and labor.
- Be signed by the applicant, or the applicant's authorized agent.
- Give such other data and information as required by the building official.
