When is a Building Permit Required?
A building permit is required when:
- Building or remodeling a house*
- Re-roofing and/or re-siding
- Constructing a shed or accessory building greater than 120 s.f.,(120 s.f. or less requires a Zoning Permit.)
- Installing a wood or gas fireplace, wood stove, or chimney

- Finishing a lower level or basement*
- Adding or extending a garage
- Replacing windows
- Changing or installing heating or air conditioning*
- Installing plumbing fixtures including underground sprinkler systems

- Constructing a retaining wall over four feet in height
- Constructing a swimming pool over 5,000 gallons or 24 inches in depth
- Putting on a deck or porch
- Doing electrical work
*
- Work on commercial and industrial buildings*
* These projects may also require a plumbing, mechanical or lawn irrigation permit depending on the project.
A Zoning permit is required when building:
- Parking pads
- Fences
- Patios
- Accessory Structures
Application for permit
To obtain a permit, the applicant shall first file an application on a form furnished by the
Building Department or downloaded from our edocs page.
+ Note: Separate permits are required for plumbing, mechanical and
electrical work.
Such application shall:

Identify and describe the work to be covered by the permit for which application is made.

Describe the land on which the proposed work is to be done by legal description, street address and tax I.D. number.

Indicate the use and occupancy for which the proposed work is intended.

Be accompanied by construction documents and site plan.

State the valuation of the proposed work including material and labor.

Be signed by the applicant, or the applicant's authorized agent.

Give such other data and information as required by the building official.
